About the author: Harold Bell Wright was a best-selling American writer. Although mostly forgotten or ignored after the middle of the 20th century, Bell Wright had a very successful career and is said to have been the first American writer to sell a million copies of a novel and the first to make $1 million from writing fiction. More than fifteen movies were made, or claimed to have been made based on Bell-Wright's stories, including Gary Cooper's first major movie, The Winning of Barbara Worth made in 1926 and the John Wayne film The Shepherd of the Hills made in 1941 which was based on this novel.
About the title: The story depicts the lives of "mountain people", those living in the Ozarks just after the turn of the century and the arrival of an outsider (referred to as The Stranger in the book) named Daniel Howitt. Howitt helps several of the locals who are experiencing hardship. Grateful for the help, one of the locals suggests Daniel, who wants to settle permanently into the area, buy land next to the Matthews family but Young Matt Matthews is embittered over the stranger's suspicions concerning the mysterious death of his mother years ago.
Condition of book: In VERY GOOD! overall condition, there is are small spots of wear and blemishes to the embossed cloth covers, more to the back cover than the front and there is more pronounced wear to the embossing on the spine, which also shows spots of fraying at the top and base. The sewn-in bind is in GOOD! order with some separation near the bottom of pages 114-119. Pages show VERY MINIMAL! foxing (for the age of the book) with all text clear and legible and all black-and-white illustrations bright and vivid. The book has a couple of pages with tears to the bottom. There are NO! dog-eared corners in the book. Book is complete at 352 pages. Book contains four original black-and-white illustrations by artist Frank Graham Cootes.

The book is in good shape and very well packed, but with an extreme smell of smoke, that I don’t think was mentioned in the book information. And then the seller made it right, which was much appreciated.
