About the authors, editor and title: With the full title being What the World Believes, the False and the True, Embracing the People of All Races and Nations, Their Peculiar Teachings, Rites, Ceremonies, from the Earliest Pagan Times to the Present, to Which Is Added an Account of What the World Believes Today, this book was written by fourteen different authors and compiled and edited by George Hagar. A complete dissertation of the various religions of the world (as they were at the time of the book's publication in 1888) and the various Gods, demi-Gods, ceremonies, systems and customs of worship and adoration and the rituals associated with each. Book contains copious original engravings and maps with numerous portraits of important characters within world religions and systems of faith (again, as such existed up to 1888). The Times Encyclopedia and Gazetteer stated in 1889 "[this book] is superbly and profusely illustrated with hundreds of subjects in full color, monotone and text cuts, augmented by a fine collection of colored maps of the principal countries and a valuable Appendix of often-sought-for facts in almost every department of human knowledge, including a chronological history of the world ... a most comprehensive narrative of the world briefly noted day by day". This exhaustive tome is fully descriptive and wonderfully illustrated with scenes from bizarre rites to strange customs and folklore.
Condition of book: In FAIR! overall condition. There is rub and to the covers front and back and MILD! discoloration and blemishes. Internal pages show the expected foxing for newsprint of the period, yet all text is clear and legible and the exhaustive content of illustrations and engravings is bright and vivid with MINIMAL! fading apparent. The majority of the maps and illustrations have tissue overleaf. There are some images that have been cut out of the book and there are pages with small tears.
