About William Taylor Adams | Oliver Optic: William Adams, who often wrote under the pseudonym Oliver Optic, spent twenty years as a teacher in Boston schools and was a major author of children’s literature during the nineteenth century. In 1865, Adams left teaching to write full-time and over the next thirty-two years published 126 novels and almost 1,000 short stories, all for young people. Though criticized by Louisa May Alcott and others for sensationalism in his narratives, Adams maintained his goal was to “combine healthy moral lessons with a sufficient amount of exciting interest” for young readers always incorporating the principles of self-discipline, moral righteousness, a spirit of adventure, patriotism and the love of God and family into his stories and poems. Many of his works include references to the sea which can be a fitting background in which these virtues can be learned.
About the book: Vol VI of The Nursery: Illustrated Stories and Poems for Little People is a compilation of approximately 500 illustrated nursery stories and poems for young readers by various authors and Edited by William T. Adams | Oliver Optic. Each of the stories and poems has specially commissioned illustrated plates to accompany the verbiage. Stories and poems about the sea, one of Adams' favorite backdrops. to taming an intemperate horse and working on the farm, all aimed at capturing the attention and imagination of little boys. For little girls, there are poems and stories about dancing at The Grand Ball, a Christmas Party for the Dolls and sheet music with notes and lyrics.
Condition of book: In VERY GOOD! antique condition with a strong, sturdy spine and bind and NO! pages separating. Embossed covers show light wear and rub to the corners and edges. The embossed spine is clear and legible with MINIMAL! wear apparent. Interior pages show MINIMAL! foxing for the age of the book and there are NO! ripped or torn pages, NO! margin notations and NO! dog-eared corners. All of the 376 specially-commissioned illustrated plates within the book, each is bright and vivid with NO! fading apparent and all text is clear and legible.
