About the author: Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, often referred to as Mrs Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of the many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor and are of interest to social historians, as well as lovers of literature. Some of Gaskell's best-known novels are Cranford (1851–53), North and South (1854–55) on which the famous TV series from the mid 1980s is based and where Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley got his their starts and Wives and Daughters (1865).
Synopsis: In Ruth, Elizabeth Gaskell's second novel, the author sets out to portray not the Condition of England, a topic she already famously addressed in her first work "Mary Barton", but rather the nature and sensibility of a fallen woman in the Victorian age. Gaskell's orphaned heroine - named Ruth - is apprenticed to a dressmaker. Ruth is seduced, impregnated and finally abandoned by the wealthy young gentleman Sir Henry Bellingham. Shamed in the eyes of Victorian society by her illegitimate son, yet rejecting the opportunity to marry her seducer, Ruth finds a path that affirms people - specifically women of the Victorian, or any age - reminding us we not always bound to repeat mistakes. When first published the book's early reviewers were less scandalized than moved and intrigued by the delicate situation of the eponymous heroine. In considering her concept of a 'fallen woman', Gaskell explored the worlds of nineteenth-century experience from the female perspective, concerned primarily with women, family, love and religion.
Condition: In VERY GOOD! condition for its age and complete with a strong, sturdy spine and sewn-in bind with NO! pages separated from the bind. There are some penciled annotations to the margins in various spots in the book. There is also a name, brief inscription and date (Christmas, 1885) penciled into the front overleaf of the book. There are stains and blemishes to the boards | covers front and back. The embossed covers are clear and legible. There is a tear to the spine at the bottom-right corner at the back. Interior pages show MODERATE! foxing | yellowing for their age. NO! ripped, torn or dog-eared pages in the book. Book contains 4 illustrations which are bright and vivid with LITTLE TO NO! fading apparent. Text is clear and legible. Please review each of the posted photos for a complete visual of the item.
